Ways of looking: Lexicalizing visual paths in verbs

چکیده
The packaging of meaning in verbs varies widely across languages since are free to encode different aspects an event. At the same time, tend display recurrent preferences lexicalization, e.g. verb-framing vs. satellite-framing motion. It has been noted, however, that lexicalization patterns motion not carried over domain vision, gaze trajectory (‘visual path’) is coded outside main verb even verb-framed languages. This ‘typological split’ (Matsumoto 2001), universal. article contains first extensive report vision based on data from Maniq (Austroasiatic, Thailand). investigated using a translation questionnaire and picture-naming task, which tap into subtle semantic detail. Results suggest meanings shaped by universal constraints linked earth-based verticality bodily mechanics, as well local factors such environment cultural scenarios looking salient part. A broader look whole lexicon reveals further cases verbally encoded spatial notions demonstrates pervasive cross-domain systematicity, pointing language system itself important shaping force lexicalization.

Verbs are LookING Good in Language Acquisition
Statistical learning is an important element of language acquisition. A basic unresolved question is, what are the units over which statistics are calculated? In a corpus study and two infant behavioral experiments, we show that varying the units that are used greatly affects learning. Using words as units, nouns are easier to segment from continuous speech than verbs. However, if a highly freq...
متن کاملLooking for Prepositional Verbs in Corpus Data
We propose a number of unsupervised methods for extracting prepositional verbs (e.g. refer to, look for) from corpus data, based on linguistic tests and/or statistical measures. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the individual techniques over a prepositional verb deep lexical acquisition task, and go on to document the successes of an unsupervised classifier combination method.
متن کاملNew ways of looking at experimental phasing.
In the original work by Blow and Crick, experimental phasing was formulated as a least-squares problem. For good data on good derivatives this approach works reasonably well, but we now attempt to extract more information from poorer data than in the past. As in many other crystallographic problems, the assumptions underlying the use of least squares for phasing are not satisfied, particularly ...

متن کاملDisambiguating Visual Verbs
In this article, we introduce a new task, visual sense disambiguation for verbs: given an image and a verb, assign the correct sense of the verb, i.e., the one that describes the action depicted in the image. Just as textual word sense disambiguation is useful for a wide range of NLP tasks, visual sense disambiguation can be useful for multimodal tasks such as image retrieval, image description...
